Logic of English -- A

This course combines phonics, spelling analysis, basic grammar, and introductory vocabulary or morphemes.

Classical Composition I

Students read short stories with a moral, outline what happens and why it matters, then retell each story in their own words. They practice vivid description, vary word choice and sentence structure, and learn to expand or tighten a narrative while keeping its meaning intact. The goal is clear, imaginative writing and a firm grasp of how stories work.

Traditional Spelling IV

Students practice hearing and spelling the main patterns of English: closed and open syllables; long-vowel and r-controlled teams; consonant blends and teams; silent letters; prefixes and suffixes; plurals and possessives; contractions; compound words; and homophones. They also apply the Double, Drop, and Change ending rules.

Lists go home on Day 1 for practice. The Friday test is twenty words plus one dictated sentence. Review weeks recycle words that were missed.

English Grammar Recitation II

This course trains students to know English grammar the way they know Latin forms: by reciting questions, answers, and examples until the terms are fluent. Over the year we review the parts of speech and the parts of the sentence, master the capitalization and punctuation style sheets, and learn the verb system Henle Latin needs—principal parts, the infinitive, participles, the six tenses, and progressive and emphatic forms. Short written exercises and some diagramming support the recitation; the recitation itself is the work of the class.

Literature 2-3

This course develops a love of literature through the reading and discussion of engaging stories and classic works, while building reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and the ability to respond thoughtfully to characters, themes, and ideas.

Literature 5: Exploration

In 5th Grade Literature, students will set sail on a year of great adventures through classic and historical literature. From the shores of Iceland to the jungles of the South Seas, from pirate-infested waters to an eighty-day journey around the globe, students will encounter characters who must make difficult choices, overcome danger, resist temptation, and learn what it means to live courageously and faithfully.

Literature 6

This course is a journey through history, from the ancient world to the modern era, using great stories, biographies, and historical accounts to examine what it means to live a good and faithful life.

As students encounter people facing war, injustice, suffering, temptation, leadership, sacrifice, and difficult choices, they will learn to read not only for what happens in a story, but for what a story reveals about the virtues of courage, faithfulness, justice, humility, perseverance, and love of neighbor.

Latin 5

Fifth Grade Latin strengthens the forms begun in the first year of Henle and builds the structures students need for simple Latin sentences. The course reviews noun declension, then adds adjective agreement, personal and reflexive pronouns, and the present system of the verb — present, imperfect, and future — across the four conjugations and the verb to be.

Students learn to match adjectives to nouns, to recognize case and person in a sentence, and to use sum with a predicate noun or adjective. Daily recitation of the charts is the core of the class; written work stays brief and supports what is said aloud.
